Did you ever go to the doctors office for an ailment, receive treatment and leave with the paperwork, that was given on your exit, to find out it was wrong? It somehow happens more than you know!
I went to a clinic with an ailment that was treated in a timely manor. I was very happy with the doctor and conditions, but when I had received the paperwork I was shocked. The paperwork was for another patient, not me. The paperwork contained the patient's name, address, telephone number, ailment, treatment, etc. All of the information that constitutes Electronic protected health information (ePHI) which refers to any protected health information (PHI) that is covered under Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) security regulations.
I immediately called the main office of the clinic to talk to the Security Officer. After explaining what had happened, I was told to mail the information back. Later I was called and told to bring the information back the next time I was around. A third time I was notified by another individual and told to shred the documents.
My next question was, "What Happened to My Information?" No answer. They said they would send me another copy.
Two weeks later it happened to my wife. Really! Same place!
How would you handle it? Thoughts?
